Panel Discussion: Democracy on the Ballot, March 14

Experts to Discuss Influence of Social Media and AI on 2024 Elections.

In anticipation of the upcoming 2024 election campaign, a discussion panel will take place on Thursday, March 14, to delve into the intricate dynamics of the current electoral environment, emphasizing the pivotal roles of social media and artificial intelligence (AI) in shaping modern campaigns and elections.

Hosted at the Alumni House from 4 to 5:30 p.m., the discussion will provide a comprehensive understanding of the evolving landscape of political communication and voter engagement strategies. Featured panelists will include faculty experts Gwen Alphonso, PhD, and Gayle Alberda, PhD, from the Department of Politics, and guest speakers James Simon, PhD, registrar of voters in Stratford, Conn., and Nicholas Kapoor, instructor of the practice in mathematics and chairman of the CT Commission on Human Rights and Opportunities.

"We organized this event since we, in the Politics Department, were keenly aware how much the Election of 2024 could be a game changer," said Dr. Alphonso, professor of politics. "The stakes, in many ways, could not be higher! Whose freedoms are protected, who gets to vote, who will be deported or get to stay, whether AI will influence how we participate in this crucial rite of American democracy – issues that vitally impact so many of our lives will all be on the ballot come November. It’s crucial that students and the community at large have an informed, lively and compassionate discussion, from multiple perspectives on these and related issues.”

Known for her research in American political culture, Dr. Alphonso will offer insights into the historical events that have contributed to the present electoral climate. Dr. Alberda, associate professor of politics, and a leading authority on the intersections of election laws, political participation and civic engagement, and election administration, will explore the transformative impact of digital platforms on political discourse and voter behavior.

The discussion will not only reflect on past trends but also offer forward-looking perspectives on what to expect as the 2024 campaign unfolds. Attendees can anticipate a lively exchange of ideas and perspectives from the distinguished panelists, each bringing their unique expertise to the table.
